Syria – Human Conflict
Disaster Description
Back in April 2011, Israeli Flying Aid was one of the first NGOs that delivered aid to women and children in Syria. In order to protect our team members and local contacts, we cannot discuss the particulars of our missions. We have delivered aid into Syria via three different borders.
Casualties: more than 900,000
Injured: more than 2.7 million
Missing: 240,000
Refugees: 6.2 million
IDPs: 6.9 million
Why We Deployed
We, as Israelis and Jews, do not stand idly by when genocide occurs. It is our obligation to protect the lives of innocent people from murder. As a state that was founded in the aftermath of the Holocaust, we strive to be the voice of the voiceless.Impact
- 1,255 tons of food, blankets and temporary shelters
- 3.2 million dry meals
- 500 digital cameras and 2 satellite transmitters
- 300 Syrian firefighters and search and rescue personnel trained
- More than $8 million USD worth of medical equipment
- Trained 22 Syrian orthopedists to use 3-D printers to make prosthetic limbs
- Computerized 9 hospitals in Syria
- 2,000 pairs of orthopedic shoes given to alleviate lower limb injuries
- 600 first aid kits for wounded Syrians returning home from medical care in Israel
- 600 school backpacks with stationery and school supplies
- 3 tons of diapers
- 25 tons of baby formula
- Medical equipment for a maternity ward with 20 beds and two gynecological operating rooms
- Evacuated the 9 remaining Jews in Aleppo and safely resettled them in Israel
- Initiated an Israeli-Syrian dialogue in Europe, which included former Israeli generals, Israeli members of Knesset, Syrian opposition leaders, and prominent Syrian and Israeli businessmen.
- We built theย โBrekaโ hospital, a womenโs hospital in Southern Syria, in order to allow safe births and treat rape victims. Many women are scared to go into hospitals because they are targeted in airstrikes by the regime and the Russians, a strategy to harm the resilience of the civilians. In the last five years, thousands of Syrian women have given birth at home, in a dangerous and unsterile environment. IFAโs hospital provides women with excellent care and a safe place to give birth, because the hospital is one kilometer from the Israeli border, which should hopefully prevent airstrikes. There are 17 beds in the hospital, four delivery rooms, and two surgery rooms, one which deals with C-Sections and one which provides vaginal reconstruction to rape victims. The average stay in the hospital is two days, and at full capacity, treated over 510 women a month.
