Burma – Cyclone

Disaster Description

A catastrophic cyclone tore through the Irawaddy Delta in Burma in 2008, destroying millions of homes. The government in Myanmar is controlled by a junta. Foreign aid groups were not allowed in the countries to provide assistance, which made the death toll balloon.

Injuries: 20,000
IDPs: 1,500,000

Why We Deployed

We launched a covert mission in order to provide the Burmese with desperately needed assistance, and we became the first NGO to enter the delta and provide the people with assistance

Number of People Deployed: 5 volunteers
Length of Stay: 3 weeks

Impact

  • 80,000 people received dry food supplies, candles, and tarps for temporary shelter
